📩 Question:
If someone prays Maghrib and 'Isha' combined due to rain (*Jam'an bi-sababi al-matar*), when should he pray the Sunnah of Maghrib, when should he pray the Sunnah of 'Isha', and when should he pray Witr?
📝 The answer:
If a person combines the two prayers due to rain, he performs the voluntary prayers after completing both obligatories in the following manner:
1. Sunnah of Maghrib (2 Rak'ahs):
He starts with the Sunnah of Maghrib (two rak'ahs). It is considered makeup (*Qada'*) for having delayed it beyond its immediate post-prayer slot due to combining the obligatory prayers, and he is excused for this delay.
2. Sunnah of 'Isha' (2 Rak'ahs):
Next, he prays the Sunnah of 'Isha' (two rak'ahs). It is considered performed on time (*Ada'*) within its proper timeframe.
3. Witr Prayer:
After that, he prays Witr, which is also considered performed on time (*Ada'*).
Even if the Adhan for 'Isha' has not yet been called (due to combining early at the time of Maghrib), the time for Witr prayer begins immediately after completing the obligatory 'Isha' prayer according to the correct scholarly opinion. This is based on the Hadith where the Prophet (ﷺ) said regarding Witr prayer:
"It is between the 'Isha' prayer until the onset of dawn.
(Recorded by Ahmad on the authority of Abu Basrah al-Ghifari رضي الله عنه, and it is an authentic Hadith)
