How it works

Channels write a contact for advertising into their description, such as “Ads: @manager”. We read the descriptions of the public channels in our index and group channels that list the same contact. Across 133,186 channels with more than 10,000 subscribers, one in five shares its contact with at least one other channel.

What we found in those networks, from city channel franchises to agencies that sell advertising in hundreds of channels at once, is in our research article.

Why it matters when you buy ads

A dozen channels that look independent can be one seller. Buying from several of them reaches mostly the same people, and in our data large channels that belong to networks get far fewer views per subscriber than independent channels of the same size. Check a channel before you pay for a post in it.

Questions

What counts as a network?

Telegram channels put a contact for advertising in their description: a manager’s username or a link to an agency channel. When the same contact appears on two or more channels, we treat those channels as one network. It usually means one owner, or one agency that sells advertising for all of them.

Does a shared contact prove the channels have one owner?

No. Many contacts belong to ad agencies and sales managers who sell slots in channels they do not own. A shared contact tells you the channels are sold together, which is what matters when you buy advertising.

Why is my channel not found?

We read the descriptions of public channels in our index. A channel that lists no contact, lists a contact no other channel uses, or has no description in our index will show no network. Very small channels are not checked.

How fresh is the data?

Networks are built from the channel descriptions in our index. If a channel changed its contact after we last read its description, it can still show its old network.
