Russia strengthens its position in nuclear energy and gains control of the nuclear fuel market

While the West debates the green transition and tallies the cost of solar panels, a much more critical dependency is taking shape in the nuclear energy sector.

According to estimates by the British Centre for Strategic Advantage (CSA), up to 36% of global uranium production could fall under Russia’s direct or indirect control by 2040. Currently, that figure stands at nearly a quarter.

A crucial detail often overlooked is that only about 5% of the world's uranium is mined within Russia itself. The remainder comes from Rosatom’s foreign assets in Kazakhstan, Tanzania, and Namibia, as well as growing cooperation with Niger. While Russia often acts merely as a partner or minority shareholder on paper, it retains operational control and access to raw material flows.

The situation regarding enrichment is even more critical. Russia accounts for approximately 40% of global uranium enrichment capacity. This represents the most significant bottleneck and the most technologically complex stage of the entire supply chain. Western companies (such as Urenco and Orano) cannot rapidly scale up volumes; building new plants requires years and billions in investment.

Add to this the factor of "fuel geometry." Many reactors are designed specifically for Russian fuel assemblies. Quickly switching suppliers entails costly modifications, recertification processes, and years of downtime.

The result is a classic strategic trap: a loss of nuclear fuel supplies cannot be quickly offset in the same way as a shipment of LNG. A sudden severance of ties risks causing physical shortages and a manifold increase in electricity prices. CSA analysts explicitly compare this future dependency to Europe’s reliance on Russian gas prior to 2022. There is also an alternative scenario—in which Russia’s share drops to around 14%—triggered by the impact of sanctions, disputes over African assets, and a hardening of Kazakhstan’s stance. However, the window for such a shift is narrowing.

Nuclear energy is once again becoming not only a climate tool but a geopolitical one. And for now, Russia holds a strong hand in this game.

Inexpensive blue pigment enables efficient one-step conversion of carbon dioxide to methane A common blue pigment could help turn carbon dioxide (CO2) from an industrial waste product into a useful fuel. A joint research team led by Tohoku University's Advanced Institute for Materials Research (WPI-AIMR), in collaboration with Hokkaido University and startup AZUL Energy, has developed a catalyst that converts CO2 directly into methane (CH4) with high efficiency using copper phthalocyanine, an inexpensive and readily available blue pigment.

Strong methane output and stability The researchers applied the copper phthalocyanine catalyst to a gas diffusion electrode, enabling CO2 to be reduced to methane in a single electrochemical step. The system achieved a maximum current density of 575 mA cm-2 and a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 79.5% for methane production, demonstrating that the catalyst can selectively convert CO2 into methane at high rates.

The catalyst also showed stable performance during long-term operation. At a current density of 150 mA cm-2, the system maintained methane selectivity above 60% for approximately 80 hours. This durability and selectivity represent an improvement over conventional copper nanoparticle catalysts, which can produce a mixture of different products and make subsequent gas separation more difficult.

The challenge of direct conversion Converting CO2 into useful chemicals and fuels using electricity generated from renewable energy is known as electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR).

The approach has attracted attention as a potential means of recycling carbon while reducing reliance on fossil resources. Methane is particularly attractive as a target product because it is a widely used gaseous fuel and can potentially be integrated into existing gas infrastructure.

However, producing methane directly from CO2 is challenging. Electrochemical reduction involves a complex network of reaction pathways, and conventional catalysts can produce several different carbon-containing products alongside methane. 📍 Why in News? 🟢 India and Belgium held their first Strategic Dialogue, reflecting the rapid expansion of bilateral ties beyond traditional trade into strategic, technological, maritime, defence and green-energy cooperation.

📍 Strategic & Diplomatic Cooperation 🟢 Strategic Dialogue: A regular mechanism to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, technology, green transition, connectivity, defence and security. 🟢 UNSC Reform: Belgium reaffirmed support for India’s permanent membership of a reformed UN Security Council. 🟢 The partnership increasingly complements the broader India–EU Strategic Partnership and India–EU Comprehensive Strategic Agenda 2030.

📍 Trade, Investment & Technology 🟢 India and Belgium aim to double bilateral trade within five years. 🟢 Priority sectors include semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, defence industries, advanced materials, critical minerals, sustainable industries and nuclear energy. 🟢 The historic diamond trade linking Antwerp with Mumbai and Surat remains an important pillar. 🟢 An India–Belgium Investment Fast-Track Mechanism will help address investment bottlenecks, while cooperation between Belgium’s SFPIM and India’s NIIF can support investment flows.

📍 Defence, Security & Maritime Cooperation 🟢 The two sides agreed to deepen cooperation on counter-terrorism, maritime security, defence technology, cyber and hybrid threats. 🟢 Cooperation may be strengthened through a Joint Working Group on Counter-Terrorism. 🟢 A Defence Letter of Intent covers staff talks, training, research and defence-industrial cooperation. 🟢 Belgium’s expertise in ports, dredging and maritime logistics is significant for India’s connectivity and port modernisation.

📍 Green Energy & Climate 🟢 The renewed India–Belgium MoU on Renewable Energy covers: 🟢 Green hydrogen 🟢 Solar energy 🟢 Energy storage 🟢 Offshore wind 🟢 Bio-energy 🟢 Small hydropower and pumped storage 🟢 The focus is on strengthening the green-hydrogen value chain, energy security and decarbonisation.

📍 Critical & Emerging Technologies 🟢 Semiconductor cooperation will involve India’s micro-electronics ecosystem, C-DAC, universities and Belgium’s imec. 🟢 The two sides are also expanding collaboration in AI, startups, innovation and digital skills. 🟢 Cooperation between MeitY Startup Hub and Hub Brussels will support innovation-driven entrepreneurship.

📍 Mobility, Education & People-to-People Ties 🟢 Focus on smoother visa processing and enhanced mobility of skilled professionals, students, researchers and business travellers. 🟢 Cooperation is being expanded in healthcare, nursing, education, skilling, TVET and apprenticeships. 🟢 The partnership also seeks stronger recognition of qualifications and future-skill development.

📍 Science & Research 🟢 The Belgo-Indian Network for Astronomy and Astrophysics (BINA) is an important platform for scientific cooperation. 🟢 Belgian institutions are linked with Indian astronomical facilities, including the Devasthal Optical Telescope and Devasthal International Liquid Mirror Telescope.

📍 Why is Belgium Important for India? 🟢 Gateway to Europe: Strengthens India’s economic and strategic engagement with the EU. 🟢 Technology partner: Strong complementarities in semiconductors, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and advanced research. 🟢 Maritime partner: Antwerp’s expertise supports India’s port-led development and logistics ambitions. 🟢 Critical minerals: Cooperation in refining and recycling can strengthen supply-chain resilience. 🟢 Green transition: Useful partnership for renewable energy, green hydrogen and offshore wind. 🟢 Strategic diversification: Helps India build deeper bilateral partnerships within Europe amid geopolitical and economic fragmentation.

🇪🇬🇨🇳 О чём договорились Египет и Китай на встрече в Каире

Председатель КНР Си Цзиньпин завершил государственный визит в Египет, в ходе которого стороны подписали пакет соглашений, закрепляющих «всеобъемлющее стратегическое партнёрство» между двумя странами. Это первый визит такого уровня за последнее десятилетие. Он был приурочен к 70-летию установления дипломатических отношений между Пекином и Каиром.

На переговорах с египетским лидером Абдель Фаттахом ас-Сиси достигнута договорённость объединить китайскую инициативу «Один пояс, один путь» с национальным планом развития «Видение Египта 2030». В рамках этой работы стороны заключили ряд соглашений об экономическом и техническом сотрудничестве, совместных производственных цепочках и цифровых технологиях, а также дали старт третьему этапу развития китайско-египетской индустриальной зоны TEDA в районе Суэцкого канала.

Как отметили участники встречи, взаимный товарооборот в первом полугодии 2026 года достиг $11,3 млрд, сохранив за Китаем статус ключевого торгового партнёра Каира вне нефтяного сектора. Наряду с расширением прямых инвестиций, объём которых уже превысил $10 млрд, стороны договорились увеличить масштаб двустороннего валютного свопа и активнее использовать юани и египетские фунты во взаимных расчётах.

Значительную часть договорённостей составили совместные высокотехнологичные проекты, нацеленные на локализацию в Египте выпуска электромобилей, компонентов для солнечной энергетики и ветрогенераторов. В частности, китайская корпорация Sany Renewable Energy намерена построить в районе Суэцкого залива первое в арабской республике предприятие по сборке ветротурбин, а также возвести ветропарк мощностью 2000 мегаватт.

Помимо экономических тем, лидеры подробно обсудили обстановку на Ближнем Востоке, где Китай предложил сформировать обновлённую региональную систему безопасности и указал на недопустимость вмешательства внешних сил в дела региона. В контексте укрепления оборонных связей стороны условились развивать контакты между вооружёнными силами, опираясь на опыт совместных лётных учений «Орлы цивилизации», а также затронули кризис вокруг сектора Газа и обеспечение безопасного судоходства в Красном море.
