Are Syrians, Egyptians, Iraqis actually Arab?

Modern Persian Muslims, Hindus, and Jews are notorious for seeking social prestige by making false claims of blood descent from revered ancient populations (real or imagined).

For example, modern Persians and Hindus claim to be the blood descendants of white European-looking Aryan conquerors, and Europan Jews claim to be the blood descendants of ancient Hebrews.

In Rapoport's new academic book "Becoming Arab" he establishes that the same phenomenon characterizes "Arab" populations outside the Gulf (e.g., in Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Morocco).

By the 9th century CE, the non-Arab conquered populations of these regions adopted the Arabic language.

However between the 11th and 15th centuries they went a step further. To boost their social prestige, they began claiming that they were actual blood descendants of the Arab Muslim tribes who had conquered these regions.

They also adopted accents and forms of dress that they associated (often inaccuately) with ancient Arabs.

(A comparable more recent example is the red and white shemagh).

These changes went hand in hand with new claims that their blood and lineage was superior and more Islamic than that of other Muslim groups like Turks, Kurds, Black Africans, and so on.

This phenomenon also underlies tendencies of many contemporary Arab nationalists to boast that they conquered the ancestors of other Muslims, that they have a unique and special knowledge of Islam, and that they have a unique and special love for Islam - as it is the religion of their ancestors.

Rapaport's book does Muslims a service by undermining retarded nationalism of this type, which often competes with and displaces more praiseworthy transnational forms of Islamic identity.

Persian nationalism, Turkish nationalism, Indonesian nationalism, and even Arab nationalism must be critiqued and weakened in favor of Pan-Islamic identity.
