📹✡️ 200+ Israeli filmmakers rally behind ‘NAZA’ creators and its expose of Gaza genocide
A petition signed by the filmmakers warns that Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, the Israeli creators of the movie ‘NAZA’, which lays bare "Israel's calculated mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza," face increasing threats of violence and physical harm.
The filmmakers called for NAZA to be released in Israel so that audiences can have an open debate about the Gaza genocide.
‘NAZA’ is a documentary based on the anonymous testimonies of 24 Israeli soldiers and intelligence personnel.
The film’s title is a Hebrew intelligence euphemism for the number of civilians expected to be killed in a given airstrike.
Its filmmakers note that their Israeli identity gave them greater access to sources, while Palestinian filmmakers face barriers in telling the truth about Gaza atrocities.
The film exposes:
➡️ Palantir-supplied AI-assisted targeting systems known as ‘Lavender’ that drew on Gaza’s monitored telecommunications network - phone calls, movements, and interactions - to automatically generate kill lists
➡️ targeting carried out “on a mass scale, like a factory”
➡️ operators describing the process as “like a video game, because everything is done remotely” and “insanely fun”
➡️ approvals for strikes in which hundreds of civilian deaths were anticipated
➡️ one interviewee recalled an approval for 500 expected civilian casualties, noting that actual numbers killed were rarely checked afterward
➡️ destruction of civilian homes, disregard for humanitarian law, and a “general atmosphere” of “hatred” toward Palestinians among personnel
Following its recognition at the Venice festival, where it won the special jury prize, Israeli Culture Minister Miki Zohar appealed to the Interior Ministry to consider revoking the citizenship of the film's creators. He claimed the film "constitutes treason."
Abraham and Szor said the film concluded that the killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza was "a premeditated, calculated, and intentional act”.
