Trust is gradually becoming more valuable than territory, capital, or formal status.

By 2043, nation-states still existed. They had flags, anthems, ministries, and ceremonial speeches. It was just that almost no one understood what they were for anymore.
The passport lost to the wallet.
Taxes lost to subscriptions.
The border lost to the Connect button.
The first thing to collapse was the idea that a person had to belong to a place. Millions of people began belonging to protocols instead. Someone could work for TRON, get healthcare through a medical DAO, settle disputes through a Singapore arbitration market, educate their children at a virtual Montessori-Musk academy, and keep their retirement savings in a tokenized forest somewhere in Patagonia.
On the old Earth, that would have been called absurd.
On the new one, it was called Tuesday.
On a giant screen above the city stood the Black Knight of TRON. A glowing red triangle had replaced the coat of arms on his chest, while a coin spun between his fingers. Beside him, a SunPump rocket was taking off. Lower down, a token featuring a smiling green lizard was trading.
No one really remembered why it had been created, but its community was funding two schools, a satellite, and a small autonomous territory on the coast.
Cats sat below.
The internet had once joked that cats would take over the web. In the end, the joke became a technical specification. Thousands of autonomous agents traded liquidity, managed treasuries, voted, searched for arbitrage opportunities, and entered into agreements with one another faster than the old parliament could register an incoming document.
The most valuable real estate was no longer land.
The most valuable real estate was trust.
Society fragmented into thousands of small worlds. A nation of food lovers. A nation of programmers. A nation of dog people. A nation of people who believed humanity had to colonize Mars. A nation of people who thought Mars was a pointless waste of capital.
To become a citizen, sometimes you had to pass an exam. Sometimes you needed an NFT. Sometimes ten years of reputation. Sometimes all it took was buying a token.
That was why the tiny blue symbol with two paws on the map turned out to be more dangerous than all the rockets.
At first, it was just an ordinary community.
Then it got a token.
Then a treasury.
Then arbitration.
Then its own insurance system.
Then schools.
Then land.
And one morning, its members realized they had built a state, even though no one had ever set out to build one.
The old era asked:
“What country were you born in?”
The new one asked:
“Which networks did you choose to belong to?”
Perhaps state hegemony will not end with a revolution at all.
Perhaps one day it will simply look around and discover a million small societies that have learned how to function without asking permission.
