Das ist das älteste große Verschwinden der amerikanischen Geschichte, über 430 Jahre alt, und bis heute weiß niemand sicher, was mit den Menschen geschah. Ein einziges geschnitztes Wort ist der ganze Anhaltspunkt. 😳
Roanoke Island, vor der Küste des heutigen North Carolina, 1587. England versucht, hier eine dauerhafte Kolonie zu gründen. Rund 115 Siedler, darunter Frauen und Kinder, lassen sich nieder. Kurz nach der Ankunft wird ein Mädchen geboren, Virginia Dare, das erste englische Kind auf amerikanischem Boden. Der Gouverneur John White, ihr Großvater, segelt zurück nach England, um Nachschub zu holen.
Doch dann kommt der Krieg mit Spanien dazwischen. Weiße Rückkehr verzögert sich um drei lange Jahre. Als er 1590 endlich wieder auf Roanoke landet, findet er die Siedlung verlassen. Keine Menschen. Keine Leichen. Keine Anzeichen eines Kampfes. Die Häuser sind teils sorgfältig abgebaut, als hätte man geordnet gepackt.
Und dann der berühmte Fund. In einen Palisadenpfosten ist ein einziges Wort geschnitzt: CROATOAN. In einen anderen Baum die Buchstaben CRO. Croatoan war der Name einer nahen Insel und eines befreundeten Ureinwohnerstammes. Vor seiner Abreise hatte White mit den Siedlern vereinbart, dass sie im Fall eines Umzugs ihr Ziel einritzen sollten, und ein Kreuz dazu, falls sie in Not aufbrechen mussten. Ein Kreuz gab es nicht.
Das legt die wahrscheinlichste Erklärung nahe: Die Siedler zogen, vielleicht aus Mangel und Verzweiflung, zu den Croatoan und gingen in deren Gemeinschaft auf. Spätere Berichte erzählten von Ureinwohnern mit hellen Augen und europäischen Zügen. Andere Vermutungen reichen von Hunger und Krankheit über einen Angriff bis zu einem Aufbruch ins Landesinnere. Ein schweres Unwetter jener Jahre könnte Spuren getilgt haben.
Ich sag's mal so: Roanoke braucht keine Übernatur. Die nüchternste Erklärung, dass verzweifelte Menschen bei Freunden Zuflucht suchten und in einer anderen Kultur verschwanden, ist auf ihre Art fast berührender als jedes Rätsel. Trotzdem bleibt dieses eine Wort im Baum, und ein neugeborenes Mädchen, von dem niemand weiß, wie sein Leben verlief.

General Longstreet later wrote of General Micah Jenkins: ''He was one of the most estimable characters of the army. His taste & talent were for military service. In a moment of highest earthly hope, he was transported to serenest Heavenly joy; to that life beyond that knows no bugle call, beat of drum, or clash of steel. In summer of 1863 Jenkins' brigade of South Carolinians was detached from Longstreet's Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia and left to guard Richmond, therefore missing the Gettysburg Campaign. He was assigned to D.H. Hill's command in the Department of North Carolina during this time. Lee had petitioned for Jenkins' return to the army prior to the Gettysburg Campaign, sending letters to Hill and President Davis; however, Davis turned down his requests. Jenkins and his men also wished for their return to their old place in Longstreet's Corps; he also made multiple requests, but to no avail. One can only wonder what if Lee had General Jenkins and his elite SC brigade at Gettysburg on Days 1-2. KIA by friendly fire at the Wilderness in May 1864. Was riding with Longstreet who was also nearly killed by friendly fire just as their men were rolling up the union left flank in one of the war’s most brilliant flanking attacks. A few days before his demise, General Jenkins spoke his prophetic famous last words to his wife: "This is our last goodbye. I had a dream. I shall ride into the next battle, but shall not ride out." Jenkins' South Carolina Brigade, circa 1863: 1st South Carolina Infantry (Hagood's) 2nd South Carolina Rifles 5th South Carolina Infantry 6th South Carolina Infantry Palmetto Sharpshooters (Jenkins' own regiment) Hampton's Legion (now a regiment, with the 4th SC Battalion being consolidated into two companies and added to the Hampton Legion infantry battalion in Nov. 1862) from The Southern Perspective, The American Civil War
