Poi le cose, per forza o per amore, prendono sempre un’altra piega rispetto a come ce le figuriamo. Avevo immaginato di usare tecniche narrative per scrivere uno strano saggio e invece mi sono trovata impegnata a incastonare parti saggistiche in una storia polimorfa e tentacolare. In un canto è molte cose. È il più compiuto ritratto del poeta, teatrante, attivista Fortunato Favilla; è una ghost story; raccoglie testimonianze sulle lotte per la ricostruzione nel Belice terremotato; colleziona sei testi della cantautrice Anna Trap; è un romanzo epistolare; compie un’atipica ricognizione delle forme patriarcali; è un compendio di vite parallele; riflette in maniera decoloniale su sviluppo e depressione economica in Sicilia; contiene indicazioni su come entrare in contatto con i fantasmi; dà voce a militanti e dissidenti sessuali in Sicilia; racconta la storia della seminale antileva belicina; è anche prosa, ma chitarra e voce. Fortunato si è ucciso nel 1975, meno che venticinquenne. La sua favilla si è mantenuta incandescente sotto le ceneri. Non sufficiente a provocare un incendio, fa ancora abbastanza luce per illuminare coni d’ombra di centovent’anni di ingiustizie e repressioni in Sicilia. A diverse di quelle storie qui si dà spazio. 🟢 The U.S.–Israeli relationship is becoming harder—not easier—to preserve. While Washington and Tel Aviv can deepen military, technological and institutional ties to raise the cost of disengagement, no amount of institutional insulation can indefinitely compensate for declining public support and growing political divisions. The real challenge is therefore twofold: make the partnership harder to abandon, while addressing the policies that are making it increasingly costly to sustain.
Limited Insulation: Measures to Protect the U.S.–Israeli Relationship
American and Israeli studies published in 2025 and 2026 indicate that the U.S.–Israeli relationship is facing growing erosion in its political and societal foundations within the United States. This stems from declining public support, a widening generational divide, the weakening of bipartisan backing, and growing questions over the cost of America’s commitment to Israel.
This shift has also begun to manifest itself in Congress, particularly in debates over military assistance and the future of the Memorandum of Understanding, which expires in 2028. Think tanks have therefore increasingly focused on measures designed to raise the cost of retreating from the relationship while addressing the underlying causes of its declining legitimacy.
1. Institutionalising the Security Relationship
This approach rests on long-term arrangements, a new Memorandum of Understanding beyond 2028, the possible establishment of a limited defence treaty, and the expansion of military, industrial and technological cooperation.
Such measures can provide the relationship with greater stability, but they cannot eliminate Congress’s role or neutralise the impact of political change.
2. Moving from “Aid” to “Partnership”
This model emphasises investment, joint production, technology and supply chains, creating direct American interests in the continuation of the relationship.
Yet it requires substantial Israeli financial capacity and cannot, by itself, reverse the erosion of political legitimacy.
3. Deepening Military and Operational Interdependence
This includes expanding joint exercises, intelligence-sharing, the integration of defence and command systems, and the enlargement of American stockpiles and presence.
Such measures raise the cost of disengagement, but they may also intensify American fears of entanglement and constrain Israel’s own freedom of action.
4. Securing the Flow of Weapons and Supply Chains
This can be pursued through larger stockpiles, expanded joint production, increased manufacturing capacity and diversified sources of critical components.
These measures reduce logistical vulnerabilities, but they cannot prevent a political decision in Washington to restrict arms transfers.
5. Preserving Bipartisan Support
This requires expanding ties with both political parties, Congress and influential elites, while avoiding the identification of Israel with a single party.
Yet restoring a bipartisan consensus is becoming increasingly difficult as disagreements over Gaza and the West Bank persist.
6. Separating Israel’s Image from the Image of Its Government
The objective is to diversify the figures and institutions representing Israel before the American public.
Its effectiveness, however, remains limited when the disagreement concerns the policies of the state itself rather than the image of a particular government.
7. Repairing Relations with American Jews
This approach focuses particularly on younger generations and liberal and Reform Jewish currents.
But the growing distance is also rooted in genuine political and value-based differences that cannot simply be overcome through outreach.
8. Managing Disagreements and Preventing Them from Becoming Crises
This requires prior consultation, avoiding surprises, and clearly defining red lines.
While such measures can reduce miscalculation, they cannot resolve fundamental strategic disagreements.
