What is on the map: 3 million Telegram channels, 24 categories, 24 languages

The map holds 3 million public Telegram channels from the TGScope catalog, as of 10 October 2026. Each dot carries four facts about its channel and nothing else. Below: what is included, what is not, and how the channels split.

Which channels are included?

Public Telegram channels: the ones with a @username that anyone can open without an invite. They come from the TGScope catalog, which we keep checking for subscriber counts, activity and profile changes. A channel is placed on the map when it has topics or a description to read its subject from.

What is not on the map?

  • Private channels and channels that only open by invite link.
  • Groups and chats, bots and personal accounts.
  • Posts. The map reads a channel's profile, not what it publishes.
  • Channels added to the catalog after the snapshot: they join with the next version of the map.

What does each dot know?

Four things: its position, its category, its language and its subscriber band. Name, username and avatar are not part of the dot; they are fetched from our server only when you zoom in or click. Why it is built this way.

Category, topics and language are assigned by a language model from the channel's public profile, so a small share of channels is mislabelled. Subscriber counts come from our latest check of each channel.

How do the channels split by category?

Education and news are the two largest categories: 10.3% and 9.9% of the map. 21.5% of channels have no clear category and are drawn in grey. The colour next to each name is the colour of its dots.

How big are the channels?

Most of Telegram is small. 65.2% of the channels on the map have fewer than 5,000 subscribers. Dot size grows with the band, and larger dots are drawn on top, so the map looks more “famous” than Telegram really is.
