Is this Telegram channel legit? How to spot a scam channel

Telegram labels some channels itself: our catalog has 1,041 channels marked SCAM and 147 marked FAKE, 358 of them with 10K+ subscribers. Most scams never get a label, though, so here is what the labelled ones have in common and how to check the rest.

What labelled scam channels look like

What our data shows
  • They sell ads more often: 44% of labelled channels with 10K+ subscribers carry ads, against 30.3% of all channels that size.
  • They are younger: 27.4% were created after May 2024, against 22.2% of all channels with 1,000+ subscribers.
  • Crypto and trading is the most common topic among them, ahead of anime, manga & comics and technology & it.
  • The blue checkmark is rare: 6,547 channels in our catalog have it, 2,057 of them with 10K+ subscribers. A “big brand” channel without it is worth doubting.

Seven checks for any channel

  1. Look for Telegram’s own label. A red SCAM or FAKE mark next to the name is Telegram’s verdict after user reports. Leave.
  2. Check the name against the real brand. Impersonators copy names and logos of banks, exchanges, games and celebrities. Real big brands usually have the blue checkmark; copies never do.
  3. Check its age. A channel “of a company founded in 2015” that was created two months ago is not that company.
  4. Compare views with subscribers. A channel with 200K subscribers and a few hundred views per post bought its audience. Its testimonials are probably bought too.
  5. Find the owner’s other channels. The contact in the description often leads to a dozen near-identical channels selling the same thing.
  6. Be suspicious of guaranteed returns. Promises of fixed daily profit, “signals with 95% accuracy” or doubling your crypto are the most common scams on Telegram, labelled or not.
  7. Never pay or log in from a channel link. Admins of real channels do not message you first, ask for your login code or send you to “verify your wallet”.

Checks 3–5 take a minute with our free tools: creation date, real reach and other channels by the same owner. The guides explain how to read the results: fake subscribers, channel age, channel owner.

Job offers

Fake vacancies are a scam of their own, with task schemes, fees to get hired and fake recruiters. See is Telegram legit for jobs.

Impersonated brands

Copies of well-known brands are the easiest scam to fall for, because the name looks right. We looked at which brands have the most look-alike channels and how to tell the official one apart in Telegram namesakes.

Questions

What do the SCAM and FAKE labels on Telegram mean?

Telegram adds them itself after reviewing user reports. SCAM marks channels involved in fraud; FAKE marks channels impersonating a person or organisation. The owner cannot remove them.

Does the blue checkmark mean a channel is safe?

It means Telegram confirmed the channel belongs to the person or organisation it claims to be. It says nothing about the quality of what they publish, but it does rule out impersonation.

Can I report a scam channel?

Yes. Open the channel, tap its name, then Report, and choose the reason. Enough reports lead Telegram to review the channel and add a label or block it.

Are Telegram channels safe in general?

Reading a public channel is generally safe. The risk starts when a channel asks you to pay, install something, message an admin or log in somewhere.

Methodology

SCAM and FAKE labels and checkmarks are as Telegram showed them when we last checked each channel, data to 2026-09-04. Comparisons use public channels with 10K+ subscribers (ads, topic) and 1,000+ subscribers (creation period), adult channels excluded. Ads and topics are labelled automatically from channel content; creation periods come from channel IDs, see our ID study.
