Telegram proxy: the practical guide

A Telegram proxy relays the app's encrypted traffic through another server, so Telegram keeps working where it is blocked or slowed down. We check free MTProto proxies around the clock. This guide covers how to connect one, why they stop working and what our data shows about who runs them.

Working right now

Our checker currently lists 200 working proxies (12 FakeTLS, 69 dd, 119 plain). The list is rechecked every 20 minutes; the last update was 63 minutes ago. Here are the five ranked highest:

What our data shows
  • 57% of the 200 working proxies in our list on 9 October 2026 ran on servers in Germany, and 29.5% on servers inside Iran. See the full breakdown.
  • Only 17.5% used the standard HTTPS port 443. The most common port was 8443 (53.5%).
  • FakeTLS, the type that is hardest to detect, made up just 5% of working proxies. What the secret types mean.
  • Only one in eight proxy and VPN channels with 1,000+ subscribers had posted in the 30 days before our 13 August 2026 snapshot, so proxies shared in channels are often long dead.
  • 31.4% of Russian-language proxy and VPN channels were created after May 2024, twice the Persian share (14.7%). Who shares proxies on Telegram.

What a Telegram proxy is

Telegram apps have proxy support built in. You add a server, a port and a secret, and the app sends its traffic through that server instead of connecting to Telegram directly. To the network, you are talking to some server in Germany or Iran, not to Telegram. Your messages stay encrypted the whole way, so the proxy owner cannot read them, but they can see your IP address. What a proxy owner can see.

Most free proxies use Telegram's own MTProto protocol. The apps also accept SOCKS5 proxies, which need a username and password instead of a secret. A proxy only covers Telegram: your browser and other apps keep using the normal connection. If you need those too, see proxy or VPN.
