Add an MTProto proxy in Telegram for Android

Open a proxy link in the Telegram Android app or enter server, port and secret under Proxy Settings. This guide also covers links that stay in the browser and calls that lag after connecting.

Connect from a proxy link on Android

A t.me/proxy link contains the full MTProto configuration. Open it on the Android device where Telegram is installed.

  1. Tap Open in Telegram on one of the checked links below. If Android offers an app chooser, select Telegram.
  2. Review the server and port in Telegram’s confirmation screen, then tap Connect Proxy.
  3. Open a chat with recent messages. If it updates, keep the proxy enabled; if it does not, try a second server.

The listed servers answered our checker recently. Mobile carriers can block a server that remains reachable from our checker, so keep an alternative ready.

Add the proxy by hand on Android

Use manual entry if your browser does not open Telegram or you received separate server details. MTProto uses a secret; do not put it in SOCKS5 username or password fields.

  1. In Telegram, open ☰ → Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings, near the bottom.
  2. Tap Add Proxy, choose MTProto Proxy, then enter the Server, Port and Secret exactly as supplied.
  3. Save the proxy and turn on Use Proxy. Select the new server in the list if another saved proxy remains active.

Confirm the proxy is working

Proxy Settings should show Connected and a ping for the selected server. Open a fresh message or channel post; a green status without new content may be a temporary connection.

Tap the shield icon above the chat list to return to proxy settings, or use Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings. Select another saved server; Auto-Switch Proxies can help when one goes offline.

Android-specific problems

The link stays in Chrome

Use the browser’s Open in app option, or copy the t.me/proxy URL and open it in Telegram. If Android has disabled supported links for Telegram, re-enable them in system app settings.

tg:// does nothing

Try the equivalent t.me/proxy link. A custom scheme only works when Android has associated it with a Telegram app.

Proxy status is Connected but calls lag

In Proxy Settings, turn off Use proxy for calls unless calls require it. Relaying calls through a proxy adds delay.

Mobile data works but Wi-Fi does not

The two networks may filter different server ports or addresses. Recheck the list on Wi-Fi and try another server there.

The app keeps showing Connecting

Confirm the server, numeric port and full secret if entered manually. Then try a different checked server.

A Telegram proxy changes only Telegram’s connection. It does not route Chrome or other Android apps, and a server checked elsewhere may be blocked by your carrier.
