Telegram proxy not working on Android
Telegram for Android shows the connection state at the top of the chat list and keeps proxies under Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings. While it says “Connecting to proxy...”, tapping the bar offers to turn the proxy off: the quickest way to find out whether the proxy is the problem.

What it usually means
- The selected server is down or blocked on your network.
- The proxy was saved as SOCKS5 Proxy instead of MTProto Proxy, or the other way round.
- Battery or data saver limits Telegram in the background, so the connection drops whenever the app is not on screen.
- The link opened in a browser and never reached the app.
Check it step by step
- Tap the “Connecting to proxy...” bar and turn the proxy off.
If Telegram then connects directly, the proxy was the problem, and you may not need one on this network.
- Open Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy Settings and read the statuses.
Select a server marked Available with a ping, or add one from the list below.
- Turn on Auto-switch proxies.
The switch appears once Use Proxy is on and more than one proxy is saved. Choose a timeout from 5 to 60 seconds: after it, the app connects to the nearest active proxy if the current one stops working.
- Check the type when adding a proxy by hand.
A secret means MTProto Proxy; a username and password mean SOCKS5 Proxy.
- Let Telegram run in the background.
If messages arrive only when you open the app, remove battery restrictions for Telegram in the system app settings. Menu names differ between phone makers.
