Telegram Web and proxies
The web versions of Telegram run inside your browser and have no proxy settings. A t.me/proxy link opened there will not connect anything. If Telegram is blocked, use the desktop or mobile app with a proxy, or route the whole browser through a VPN.
What you see
| Where | On screen |
|---|---|
| Telegram Web settings | No proxy section |
| A proxy link in the browser | A web page with a button to open the app |
What it usually means
- MTProto proxies need a raw network connection to the proxy server. Web pages cannot open such connections; Telegram Web talks to Telegram through the browser’s own web connections.
- So Telegram Web can only change route at the level of the browser or device: through a VPN, or a proxy set for the whole browser or system.
Check it step by step
- Install Telegram Desktop or the mobile app if Telegram Web does not load.
The apps have proxy support built in. Add a server from the list below.
- If you have to stay in the browser, use a VPN for the whole device.
Telegram Web then goes through the VPN like any other site.
- Do not paste MTProto details into browser or system proxy settings.
Those settings expect HTTP or SOCKS proxies, not MTProto secrets.
Try a server that passed our last check
These servers passed a full MTProto handshake from our checker. List built 18 October 2026 at 15:51 UTC; it is rebuilt every 20 minutes. A server that works for our checker can still be blocked on your network.
Questions
Can I add an MTProto proxy to Telegram Web?
No. Telegram Web has no proxy setting, and a web page cannot speak the MTProto proxy protocol.
Does Telegram Web work where Telegram is blocked?
Only if the web address and Telegram’s servers are reachable from your network, or through a VPN.
Is Telegram Desktop with a proxy better than Telegram Web with a VPN?
They cover different things. A proxy covers Telegram only; a VPN covers the whole device. See proxy or VPN.
