Telegram proxy is slow: media stalls, messages lag
A proxy adds a stop between you and Telegram. When that stop is shared by thousands of strangers, far away or slowed down by your network, chats still work but photos, videos and voice messages crawl. The fix is a better server, not a setting.
What you see
| Where | On screen |
|---|---|
| Telegram for Android | “Ping: … ms” |
| Telegram for iPhone | “… ms ping” |
| Telegram Desktop | “available (ping: … ms)” |
What it usually means
- The server is overloaded. Popular free proxies are posted in big channels and end up carrying traffic for many users.
- Your network slows the connection down instead of blocking it.
- The proxy is far from you.
- Large files are slow on your current network with or without a proxy.
Check it step by step
- Compare the ping of two or three saved servers on the same network at the same time.
Lower is better, but a few dozen milliseconds hardly matter. Big differences do.
- Open the same video in a chat with each server.
This is the real test. The ping only measures a tiny packet.
- Turn off VPN apps and other tunnels.
Sending traffic through two tunnels slows both.
- If a server is slow only in the evening, keep it as a backup.
Shared servers slow down when many people use them at once.
- If every proxy is slow, check another app without a proxy.
Your network may simply be slow right now.
Try a server that passed our last check
These servers passed a full MTProto handshake from our checker. List built 18 October 2026 at 14:51 UTC; it is rebuilt every 20 minutes. A server that works for our checker can still be blocked on your network.
We do not publish response times from our own checker. It measures from one location, so its numbers say little about the speed you will get.
- 35 of the 50 highest-ranked servers in our live list answered every check we have recorded for them.
- On 9 October 2026, 57% of working proxies in our list ran on servers in Germany and 29.5% on servers inside Iran, so distance from you varies a lot between servers.
Questions
What is a good ping for a Telegram proxy?
There is no fixed number. Compare servers on your own network: the one that loads media fastest wins, even if its ping is a little higher.
Why is the proxy fine for messages but slow for videos?
Messages are small. Media needs steady bandwidth, which is the first thing an overloaded or throttled server loses.
Will a private proxy be faster?
A server that is not shared publicly usually has more spare capacity. Speed still depends on where it stands and how your network treats it.
