Telegram calls do not work through a proxy
With a proxy, messages can work perfectly while calls never connect. That is expected: the proxy carries Telegram’s messaging connection, and calls take their own route. Where calls are blocked, a proxy does not unblock them.
What you see
| Where | On screen |
|---|---|
| Messages | Sent and delivered through the proxy |
| Calls | Stuck connecting, or ended before the other side rings |
| Telegram Desktop settings | No “Use proxy for calls” switch |
What it usually means
- Calls use a separate connection, directly between the two devices or through Telegram’s call servers. An MTProto proxy relays only the messaging connection.
- Telegram Desktop’s code disables proxy support for calls for every proxy type, so its “Use proxy for calls” switch stays hidden. Earlier versions offered it for SOCKS5 only.
- Where calls are blocked nationally, the call route fails even when messages work. Iran blocked Telegram calls in April 2017, a year before the whole app.
- Strict networks block the connections calls use while letting the proxy through.
Check it step by step
- Try the call on another network.
If it connects there, the first network blocks calls.
- If Telegram works without the proxy on this network, turn it off and call again.
This shows whether the problem is the call route or something else.
- Open Settings → Privacy and Security → Calls and look at peer-to-peer.
With peer-to-peer set to Nobody, calls go through Telegram’s servers instead of straight to the other device. On some networks only one of the two routes gets through.
- Use a VPN for calls.
A VPN covers all traffic from the device, calls included. See proxy or VPN.
Try a server that passed our last check
These servers passed a full MTProto handshake from our checker. List built 18 October 2026 at 15:51 UTC; it is rebuilt every 20 minutes. A server that works for our checker can still be blocked on your network.
Questions
Why do messages work but calls fail?
The proxy relays Telegram’s messaging connection. Calls use a separate connection that does not go through it.
Is there a setting that sends calls through the proxy?
Not in current Telegram Desktop: its code switches the option off for all proxy types. Older apps offered it for SOCKS5 proxies only.
Will a different proxy fix my calls?
No. If your network blocks calls, a VPN is the tool that can carry them.
