Set up and switch a Telegram proxy on iPhone
Add an MTProto proxy to Telegram for iOS from a link or through the Proxy menu. Learn where the shield control is, how to change servers, and what to do when a link does not leave Safari.
Open a proxy link from Safari
Make sure Telegram is installed on this iPhone. The link passes the server, port and secret to Telegram; you still confirm the connection in the app.
- Tap Open in Telegram below. If Safari asks to open Telegram, allow it.
- Check the server and port shown by Telegram, then tap Connect Proxy.
- Return to chats. Wait for a recent conversation to update before assuming the server works.
Our periodic snapshot checks these MTProto servers from its own network. iPhone connectivity depends on the network you are using now.
Enter the proxy in Telegram for iOS
If a link will not launch Telegram, copy its details and use the in-app form. MTProto requires a secret in addition to server and port.
- Open Telegram → Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy, near the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Add Proxy, choose MTProto, and fill in Server, Port and Secret.
- Tap Done, enable Use Proxy and select the server you just saved.
Check and change the active server
When a proxy is enabled, a shield icon appears at the top of the chat list. Open it to inspect the selected server’s status and ping. Also confirm that a recent message arrives or a channel refreshes.
Tap the shield to pick another saved proxy. If it is stuck on Connecting, return to the live list, add a different server and select it. Auto-Switch Proxies can move to another saved server after a failure.
iPhone-specific problems
Safari does not open Telegram
Allow the Open in Telegram prompt. If it is absent, try opening the t.me/proxy link in Safari directly or add the server manually.
The link opens a preview page
Use the page’s Open in Telegram action. Copying the URL to Telegram Saved Messages and tapping it there is another way to trigger the app.
The shield is missing
The shield appears when proxy mode is on. Check Settings → Data and Storage → Proxy and enable Use Proxy.
Connected on Wi-Fi, unavailable on cellular
Your carrier may block that server or port. Try a different server while on cellular rather than assuming the saved configuration is wrong.
Messages work but media stalls
Test another server with a lower latency. An active connection can still be too slow for large downloads.
iOS system proxy or VPN settings are separate from Telegram’s Proxy menu. This proxy applies to Telegram only; a public operator can observe your IP address and connection metadata.
