Telegram not showing Amharic text? Fixes for desktop and phone
Amharic is written in the Ethiopic script (fidel). When Telegram shows empty squares, blank messages or unreadably small letters, the app is missing a font that contains Ethiopic characters or is choosing the wrong one. The text itself is usually intact.

First, find out where the problem is
Copy the message and paste it into another app on the same device, such as a notes app or a browser search box. If the text appears correctly there, the system has a suitable font and the problem is Telegram’s own font choice. If it shows boxes everywhere, the device itself lacks an Ethiopic font, and changing Telegram settings will not help until the system is updated.
The problem is most visible in channel lists: many Amharic channels write their titles in Ethiopic letters, and those titles turn into rows of boxes while Latin-script names still display.
| Language of posts | Channels | Ethiopic letters in title | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amharic | 2,149 | 591 | 28% |
| Afaan Oromo | 120 | 3 | 3% |
Telegram Desktop on Windows
Reports in Telegram Desktop’s public issue tracker describe Amharic disappearing or turning into broken glyphs after some app updates on Windows. The workaround several users report is to change the app font: open Settings → Chat Settings, find the font option (labelled Font family in recent versions) and choose a font that includes Ethiopic letters, such as Nyala or Ebrima, which ship with Windows. Restart Telegram afterwards.
If the problem began after an update, install the current version from Telegram’s official download page rather than an old build from a third-party site.
Phones and tablets
On Android and iPhone, Telegram uses the system fonts. If Amharic is missing in Telegram but correct in other apps, update Telegram and check whether a custom font or theme is applied in the app’s chat settings. If Amharic is missing in every app, update the operating system; a phone that has not received system updates for years may not include an Ethiopic font.
Typing in Amharic
Telegram does not add its own Amharic keyboard; it uses the keyboard of your device. Add an Amharic input method in your system’s language or keyboard settings — Windows and many Android keyboards offer one. Text you type is stored as standard Unicode, so recipients with a working font will see it correctly even if your own screen shows boxes.
Interface language is a separate setting
Switching Telegram’s menus to Amharic does not fix how messages are displayed. Telegram’s translation platform lists an Amharic interface translation in beta, which anyone can switch to (checked 18 October 2026). Language packs change button and menu text only; a missing font still needs the fixes above.
Quick checklist
- Paste the text into another app to locate the problem.
- On Telegram Desktop, choose an Ethiopic-capable font in Chat Settings.
- Update Telegram and the operating system.
- Add an Amharic keyboard in system settings to type.

Questions
Why does Telegram Desktop show Amharic as boxes?
The font Telegram uses has no Ethiopic characters. Choosing a font that does, such as Nyala or Ebrima on Windows, is the most commonly reported fix.
Will an Amharic language pack fix the text?
No. A language pack translates the interface. Message display depends on fonts.
Is the message lost if I see blank space?
Usually not. Copy it into another app or open it on another device; the characters are normally still there.
Fact-check note: Telegram Desktop public issue tracker (reports of Amharic rendering problems on Windows and the font-family workaround) and Telegram’s translation platform (Amharic interface translation status), reviewed 18 October 2026. Menu names can change between app versions.
About these data
The channel set was extracted on 6 October 2026 from TGScope’s catalog of analysed public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers. A channel is included when its posts are detected as Amharic or Afaan Oromo, its estimated audience region mentions Ethiopia or an Ethiopian region, or its topic tags describe Ethiopia. Adult content is excluded from the set.
Activity, age and reach fields were re-read on 18 October 2026 from the same catalog copy; 23 usernames could not be matched. The newest catalog check in this copy is dated 1 October 2026, the newest content analysis 13 August 2026 and the newest observed post 12 August 2026. Nothing here is a live Telegram check. Creation windows come from the ranges in which Telegram issues channel IDs.
Estimated views per post are catalog subscribers multiplied by the recorded views-to-subscribers ratio. We use that figure only for channels with 10,000 or more subscribers, analysed before 27 July 2026, with a post observed within 30 days before the analysis, and never the known placeholder ratio (583 channels carry it). “Not used” does not mean zero views.
Samples leave out channels with signals of adult content, betting, pirated files or full-film sharing, and topic samples leave out names that claim a ministry, bureau or other official body. Inclusion is not an endorsement, and a name is never proof of who runs a channel. Counts are of channels, not people.
