Is an Ethiopian Telegram channel still active? Dates, calendars and other checks

Lists of Ethiopian channels go out of date quickly, and a large subscriber count says nothing about whether anyone still posts. Before you rely on a channel, check when it last published and how often it does.

What our data shows about activity

When our analyser last read these channels, 42% had posted within the previous 30 days, 25% within 31–180 days and 18% had been silent for over a year. Football and news channels were the most active; music, books and other entertainment channels were the least.

Compare activity between topics

The share of recently active channels varies widely by subject. A topic with many dormant channels needs more checking before you subscribe.

Read dates in the Ethiopian calendar

Many Amharic posts use the Ethiopian calendar, which runs seven to eight years behind the Gregorian one and has 13 months. Its new year falls on 11 September (12 September in some years); the year 2019 began on 11 September 2026. A post saying “2018” may therefore be recent, and an old list titled “2014” may be from 2021 or 2022. Many posts also use the local clock, which counts hours from about 6 a.m., so “3 o’clock” in Amharic can mean 9 a.m.

Look past the subscriber count

A channel can keep hundreds of thousands of subscribers long after it stops posting. Compare the views shown on recent posts with the subscriber number: a very low ratio over many posts suggests inactive or purchased subscribers. Football fan channels in our data have the lowest median views per subscriber of any topic.

Use the age of a channel carefully

Telegram channel IDs show roughly when a channel was created. 52% of the Ethiopian channels we could read were created in June 2021 or earlier. An old channel with a new name may have changed owner or topic; the channel age checker shows whether a claimed history is plausible.

Quick checklist

  1. Open the channel preview and note the last post date.
  2. Convert Ethiopian-calendar years before judging age.
  3. Compare views on recent posts with subscribers.
  4. Check the creation window if the channel claims a long history.

Questions

What year is it in the Ethiopian calendar?

The Ethiopian year 2019 began on 11 September 2026, so most of late 2026 and 2027 falls in 2019.

How can I see when a channel last posted without joining?

Open its public preview: the newest post and its date appear at the bottom. The TGScope channel profile also shows the last post our catalog observed.

Is a channel with no recent posts dead?

Not necessarily. Some channels post only around exams, holidays or events. Check how often it posted in previous months.

Fact-check note: Ethiopian New Year 2019 date checked against news coverage of the 11 September 2026 celebration, 18 October 2026.

About these data

The channel set was extracted on 6 October 2026 from TGScope’s catalog of analysed public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers. A channel is included when its posts are detected as Amharic or Afaan Oromo, its estimated audience region mentions Ethiopia or an Ethiopian region, or its topic tags describe Ethiopia. Adult content is excluded from the set.

Activity, age and reach fields were re-read on 18 October 2026 from the same catalog copy; 23 usernames could not be matched. The newest catalog check in this copy is dated 1 October 2026, the newest content analysis 13 August 2026 and the newest observed post 12 August 2026. Nothing here is a live Telegram check. Creation windows come from the ranges in which Telegram issues channel IDs.

Estimated views per post are catalog subscribers multiplied by the recorded views-to-subscribers ratio. We use that figure only for channels with 10,000 or more subscribers, analysed before 27 July 2026, with a post observed within 30 days before the analysis, and never the known placeholder ratio (583 channels carry it). “Not used” does not mean zero views.

Samples leave out channels with signals of adult content, betting, pirated files or full-film sharing, and topic samples leave out names that claim a ministry, bureau or other official body. Inclusion is not an endorsement, and a name is never proof of who runs a channel. Counts are of channels, not people.
