Telegram shops in Ethiopia: what they sell and how to check a seller

Many Ethiopian shops sell through Telegram channels: clothes, shoes, phones, cosmetics and furniture, with product photos and a phone number or chat for orders. Buying is quick, but the channel itself offers no buyer protection.

What Ethiopian Telegram shops sell

Clothing and shoes are the largest group in our shopping pool, followed by electronics and phones, home and furniture, and beauty products. A channel can belong to more than one group.

Shop channels are mostly promotion

Our analyser marked 58% of shopping channels as carrying many promotional posts, against 9% across Ethiopian channels as a whole. That is expected for a shop, but it also means channel posts are adverts, not reviews. 65% of these channels were created in June 2021 or earlier, so long-running shops are common.

A dated sample of shop channels

The table ranks shop channels by estimated views per post where a usable observation exists, then by subscribers. Inclusion is not an endorsement; we have not bought from any of them.

Checks before you pay

Ask for the total price in birr including delivery, and for a photo of the actual item rather than a catalogue image. Prefer sellers with a physical shop you can visit or that accept payment on delivery. Look at how long the channel has existed and whether comments are open. Be wary of prices far below other shops and of pressure to pay immediately to a personal account.

When something goes wrong

Keep screenshots of the post, the price agreed and the payment. Contact the seller through the number in the channel first. If a seller disappears after payment, report the channel in Telegram and keep your evidence for your bank or mobile-money provider.

Quick checklist

  1. Get the full price in birr including delivery.
  2. Ask for a real photo of the item.
  3. Prefer a visitable shop or payment on delivery.
  4. Keep screenshots of the agreement and payment.

Questions

Is it safe to buy from Telegram shops in Ethiopia?

It can be, but Telegram offers no buyer protection. Prefer sellers you can visit or pay on delivery, and keep records.

How do I know if a Telegram shop is real?

Look for a long history, a physical address, open comments and consistent photos of real stock. Search the shop’s name outside Telegram.

Does TGScope review sellers?

No. We show catalog data only and have not tested any seller.

About these data

The channel set was extracted on 6 October 2026 from TGScope’s catalog of analysed public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers. A channel is included when its posts are detected as Amharic or Afaan Oromo, its estimated audience region mentions Ethiopia or an Ethiopian region, or its topic tags describe Ethiopia. Adult content is excluded from the set.

Activity, age and reach fields were re-read on 18 October 2026 from the same catalog copy; 23 usernames could not be matched. The newest catalog check in this copy is dated 1 October 2026, the newest content analysis 13 August 2026 and the newest observed post 12 August 2026. Nothing here is a live Telegram check. Creation windows come from the ranges in which Telegram issues channel IDs.

Estimated views per post are catalog subscribers multiplied by the recorded views-to-subscribers ratio. We use that figure only for channels with 10,000 or more subscribers, analysed before 27 July 2026, with a post observed within 30 days before the analysis, and never the known placeholder ratio (583 channels carry it). “Not used” does not mean zero views.

Samples leave out channels with signals of adult content, betting, pirated files or full-film sharing, and topic samples leave out names that claim a ministry, bureau or other official body. Inclusion is not an endorsement, and a name is never proof of who runs a channel. Counts are of channels, not people.
