Faith channels make up the largest single topic in Ethiopian Telegram. They share teaching, prayers, mezmur (hymns), sermons and community news, mostly in Amharic. The three main traditions use Telegram in noticeably different ways.

How large each tradition is in our catalog

By keyword rules on names, descriptions and tags, 278 channels have Orthodox signals, 384 Muslim signals and 50 Protestant signals. Others are general Christian or spiritual channels without a clear tradition. These counts depend on how channels describe themselves and should be read as approximate.

Orthodox Tewahedo channels

Orthodox channels are long established: 60% were created in June 2021 or earlier. Many post mezmur lyrics and audio, saints’ days, fasting guidance and teaching from named priests or church associations. None carried heavy advertising in our analysis.

Muslim channels

Muslim channels are the most numerous in our data. They share Qur’an recitation, hadith in Amharic translation, lectures by named ustaz and community news. 43% had posted within 30 days of their analysis.

Protestant channels

Protestant channels are fewer in our catalog and their recorded views per post are lower; many focus on worship songs (mezmur) and gospel news. Because “mezmur” is used by Orthodox and Protestant believers alike, check a channel’s pinned post or description before assuming its tradition.

Look for a named teacher, church, mosque or association and a description of what the channel posts. Be cautious with channels that mix religious content with fundraising appeals to personal accounts or with unrelated promotions. Audio and lyric collections may not have permission from the artists; support official releases where you can.

Are there Afaan Oromo religious channels?

A few: 7 channels in our religion pool are labelled Afaan Oromo. Most faith channels post in Amharic.

Why are Muslim channels more numerous than Orthodox ones here?

The count reflects which channels our catalog has discovered and how they describe themselves. It is not a measure of the size of either community.

About these data

The channel set was extracted on 6 October 2026 from TGScope’s catalog of analysed public channels with at least 1,000 subscribers. A channel is included when its posts are detected as Amharic or Afaan Oromo, its estimated audience region mentions Ethiopia or an Ethiopian region, or its topic tags describe Ethiopia. Adult content is excluded from the set.

Activity, age and reach fields were re-read on 18 October 2026 from the same catalog copy; 23 usernames could not be matched. The newest catalog check in this copy is dated 1 October 2026, the newest content analysis 13 August 2026 and the newest observed post 12 August 2026. Nothing here is a live Telegram check. Creation windows come from the ranges in which Telegram issues channel IDs.

Estimated views per post are catalog subscribers multiplied by the recorded views-to-subscribers ratio. We use that figure only for channels with 10,000 or more subscribers, analysed before 27 July 2026, with a post observed within 30 days before the analysis, and never the known placeholder ratio (583 channels carry it). “Not used” does not mean zero views.

Samples leave out channels with signals of adult content, betting, pirated files or full-film sharing, and topic samples leave out names that claim a ministry, bureau or other official body. Inclusion is not an endorsement, and a name is never proof of who runs a channel. Counts are of channels, not people.
